A “Boyish” Princess Who Is into Technology

Mbak Hayu

Born a princess does not simply make Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Hayu, now mostly known as Gusti Hayu, grow into a quiet, calm figure. To the contrary, the fourth daughter of Sultan Hamengku Buwono X comes cheerful, jovial, and somewhat “boyish”.

“Boyish” and Game-Addicted

Hayu was born in Yogyakarta on 24 December 1983. She was familiar with attending her schoolings in various countries. Some of her junior high school times were spent in Brisbane, Australia, her high school in Singapore, and her college in the States and England.

Hayu admits that since her childhood she has had a great fond of games, puzzles, as well as Lego. She also enjoyed roller-skates. The last mentioned hobby had even taken her into becoming the Champion in the 1992 National Roller-Skates Championship for the “Speed Skating” category. In a quick look, her hobbies have indeed helped shape her quite boyish behavior and appearance. “That’s why they said I am the only boy in the family,” she said, laughing as she recalled her childhood.

Back then, she spent a year attending junior high school in Brisbane, Australia, until she decided to return back to Indonesia, where she continued her high school at SMAN 3 Padmanaba Yogyakarta. “I spent only a year at SMA 3, before finally moving to International School of Singapore so that if I want to go to university abroad after that would be easier.”

Hayu’s parents have obliged all of their daughters to attend school abroad with the intention to help them become self-reliance. “Here in Jogja, we used to be spoiled by facilities and helps from others, so we’ve got to be thrown away abroad. Also, attending school abroad is good to train our teamwork and network building skill with people from various parts of the world,” she explained.

“I turned to the US firsthand as Mom wouldn’t let me go to neighboring countries. She said the more distant the better, so I wouldn’t go home too frequently,” smiling, Hayu answered why she had chosen to attend college in the US. “I then decided to move to England as I wanted to experience another different education system,” she continued.

Born as a princess has inevitably brought Hayu into growing as a women distinct than others. “Like it or not, I have to be selective in choosing my friends and in social life. Most of the time, I have no choice but to maintain my image, since it couldn’t be resisted that people would have certain expectations towards a princess of the Kraton,” Hayu answered.

Aside from all of those, Hayu feels that she has to make use of her status well. Bearing the status of a princess, Hayu feels obliged to contribute to changes. She makes use of easy access to various networks to make the changes she desires. As for education, Hayu, having experienced her schoolings in several countries from junior high school to college, feels that this has been an opportunity she was grateful of, again thanks to her background.

Interested in E-Government

Going for college, Hayu decided to take technology course. Hayu has always been keen on all things about technology and computer. “As a kid, when asked what I would like to be in the future, I would always answer that I wanted to be a computer geek so that I could hack banks,” Hayu said, chuckling.

As time goes by, Hayu understands that technology may be one of the ways to develop the nation. At first, Hayu took Computer Science course at Steven Institute of Technology, in the US, but then she felt that her interest was on another IT field. Therefore she moved into taking Design and IT Project Management course at Bournemouth University, England.

Graduating from college, Hayu then worked at an internet banking software house in Jakarta, and then moved to Gameloft, a global game company who has a subsidiary office in Yogyakarta. Her experiences in working in IT fields have led her to currently being entrusted to manage the Tepas Tandha Yekti, a new department in the Kraton who manages IT and documentation affairs.

Feeling restless about IT knowledge in governmental environment, Hayu dreams of improving Indonesia’s e-government system. In the future, Hayu dreams of establishing an IT company focusing on e-government while also educating and providing solutions for public policies. “Government’s procedures should have legal bases, which lie on the hands of policy makers, and not of the technicians. It means that policy makers should also have a level of  awareness on technology, so that they could help the society,” she explained.

Technology, which is associated with development and worldwide modernity, remains a valuable aspect in the eyes of this princess of Kraton. Living in an environment which firmly holds traditional values does not hold her back from being aware of the significance of the touch of modernity to life. That is the reason she engages herself in technology which, in the future, will benefit the society as well as becoming the source of inspirations for them.

For Hayu, whatever achievements she is aiming at should walk hand-in-hand with her hobbies. “I have passion in technology, and I wanted to help others. I think developing e-Government may be one of the ways with which I could educate policy makers, so that the effect will be beneficial even to the grass-root level,” Hayu explained.

Putri Tomboy Pecinta Teknologi

Awalnya Hayu mengambil jurusan Computer Science di Steven Institute of Technology, AS.
