The wedding Reception or Pahargyan of GKR Hayu and KPH Notonegoro was held in Bangsal Kepatihan on Wednesday (11/23) at 10.30am. Purple was the dominating color of the venue decoration. This peak ceremony of the series of the Kraton wedding event was preceded with the Kirab, or the Procession, starting from the Palace and heading forth to Bangsal Kepatihan.

The newlyweds changed their bluish-green Paes Ageng Jangan Menir attires into the black ones. They went out from Gedhong Pacar Binatur accompanied with the performance of gendhing Ladrang Manten, one of gamelan compositions performed in Kraton wedding ceremonies. Afterwards, the royal couple sat down on the bridal dais between the Patah Sakkembaran, or little maiden bridesmaids.

Colonel Cavalry (Rtd) Sigim Mahmud, KPH Notonegoro’s father, apparently wore a black beskap—a Javanese traditional man’s top coat—completed with the other Javanese traditional accessories, such as blangkon, a wiron engkol cloth, a keris, a sindur, and a cenela. Raden Ayu Nusye Retnowati, KPH Notonegoro’s mother, wore a blue kebaya tangkeban with some accessories, such as a brooch and safety pins, an ukel tekuk, an ubet-ubet, an angkin sindur, a wiron cloth, and a cenela.

Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X and GKR Hemas came out from Gedhong Pacar Binatur afterwards. They were welcomed with respecting salutation and gendhing Prabu Mataram. Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X wore a taqwa attire with its accessories, such as destar, angkin sindur, nyamping wiron cloth, as well as its bluish selop. The Sultan sat side to side with GKR Hemas, who wore a kebaya tangkeban with the same color as the Sultan’s attire with a brooch and safety pins, an ukel tekuk decorated with flower, a nyamping seredan ubet-ubet, an angkin sindur, and also a selop.

The Reception was initiated with the prayer by Raden Riyo H. Ngabdul Ridwan, as commanded by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. Afterwards, some dance compositions started to be performed. What made the Kraton wedding reception unique was the performance of two great dance compositions, namely Bedhaya Manten and Beksan Lawung Ageng.

The Bedhaya Manten Dance was performed by six female dancers. The dance symbolizes one’s journey into the marital life. Two of the dancers acted as the bride and the groom, while the other four acted as the Srimpi dancers in red costumes. The six dancers were accompanied by four pengampings dressed in a black janggan. This composition, created by Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, bore the message of the preparedness and self-reliance in building the future life.

As the Bedhaya Manten Dance completely performed, the invitees, whether the VIPs and the regulars, were invited to congratulate and to give approval blessings to the newlyweds. The invitees stood in line from the west side of Bangsal Kepatihan. Attending the reception were several public figures, such as the legislative members and the government officials.

“This is outstanding. Tumplak punjen, he (KPH Notonegoro) is the last in-law. It is a special event; we don’t know when we will see something like this again.” uttered Dhidhik Nini Thowok, a famous traditional and contemporary dancer who, in this occasion, wore purple-tone beskap. “I pray for their happiness. I hope they will many children and be successful. Congratulation,” he continued.

Prayers and hopes also came from Seto Mulyadi, well-known as Kak Seto or Brother Seto, the Head of the National Commission for Children Protection. “I pray for the newlyweds to be harmonious and happy. With Mbak or Sister Hayu’s skill in IT, I hope that the customs and traditions of the Kraton will ‘go international’, showing that the customs and traditions are ours.”

Having Bedhaya Manten Dance completely performed, the event was continued with the Lawung Ageng Dance. This dance composition was performed by twelve men, who rode on horses to depart to Kepatihan. The dance, composed by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, signifies the union of lingga (an image representing masculinity) and yoni (an image representing femininity) as the symbol of fertility. During the dance, the dancers also performed war-like acts or skill fighting. During the skill fighting session, they used a lawung, a three-meter long stick with blunt end, which were used by crossing and shoving it.

While the dancers were performing the Beksan Lawung Ageng, as many as 2500 attending invitees orderly stood in line to congratulate the newlyweds and to give the approval blessings. Though standing in line, they still looked enthusiastic to watch Beksan Lawung Ageng. Some of the invitees were enjoying the banquet. The invitees who have congratulated the newlyweds were invited to take the souvenirs and may leave the occasion.

The Reception finished at 01.00pm. After the invitees went home, the newlyweds and their families took pictures to capture this beautiful moment. The entourage went back to the Palace to prepare for the next event, that is, the Pamitan, which will be held later in the evening.

Acara Resepsi selesai pukul 13.oo.
